As Australia and Japan mark fifty years of friendship, the School of International Studies at Macquarie University is hosting an event to celebrate this important milestone with the Consulate of Japan in Sydney. 

The event will take place on October 13th 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. at 17 Wally's Walk, Room 330 at Macquarie University's Wallumatagal Campus.

The event panel will bring together states-people, educators and researchers to ask a pointed question: 

What does ensuring another fifty years of friendship within the broader Indo-Pacific framework actually require of us? 

While recent national debate has renewed the call to build ‘Asia capability’ across Australian institutions, the panel argues that true capability lies deeper than curriculum uptake or workforce metrics; it lies in ensuring that young Australians and Japanese have genuine, sustained opportunities to build relationships with one another at a moment when the support and infrastructure for those relationships (including homestays, study tours, and exchange programs) is under real strain.
