Opening Online Event. ‘The Miracle Pine Tree, Rikuzentaka, Japan’ Philip Brophy

In his talk, Philip Brophy will review the use of tree imagery in some anime films and artworks, focusing on the ‘Miracle Pine’ (Ippon Matsu), the last tree to survive from a grove of 70,000 trees in Rikuzentaka. The tree has been regarded as an unofficial symbol of post 3/11 recovery in Japan and will feature in his forthcoming book project provisionally titled Unnatural Disaster – Imaging Destruction in Japan from Hiroshima to Fukushima and Beyond.
